Brave is the Pixar / Disney movie that was released in June 2012. Brave was previously titled The Bear and the Bow and is a computer animated adventure movie in 3D.
The setting for the movie is the rugged highlands of Scotland and it stars the voice skills of Scottish actress Kelly McDonald as the impetuous, red-haired Merida who, although she is royalty, perfers to be known for being a great archer.
The tale is an exciting one that centres on an argument Merida has with her mother - this leads to Merida making a reckless choice that puts her father’s kingdom and her mother’s life in danger. Thankfully, the unpredictable forces of nature, magic and excitement all combine to set things right.
In Brave, Merida is the daughter of King Fergus (voiced by comedian Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voiced by Emma Thompson). Red haired Merida is the first female protagonist in a Pixar film and was originally going to be voiced by Reese Witherspoon, but she had to renounce the role due to scheduling issues.
Brave is somewhat darker and more mature in tone than previous films by Pixar and Disney. It takes place during the 10th century in the highlands of Scotland. Brave is Pixar’s first fairy tale, from filmmaker/writer Brenda Chapman who also did Prince of Egypt. Chapman's career began when she worked as an animation artist on Who Framed Roger Rabbit and went on to work on The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Rescuers Down Under, The Lion King, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Fantasia 2000, Chicken Run and Cars.
